Laboratories
ICCS and HCRC share state of the art facilities for experimental research on human communication:
- The Language Experiments Portal hosts a range of web-based experiments run by HCRC and ICCS. Many of these experiments use dedicated software developed in Edinburgh, such as WebExp.
- The Perception Lab, which is designed for the experimental study of human cognition. It can also be used for experiments that investigate how humans interact with artificial cognitive systems. It includes specialised soft- and hardware for the accurate measurement of reaction times, and for the presentation, recording, and analysis of speech data.
- The Joint Eyetracking Lab is designed for studying a range of human cognitive processes, including reading, speech, dialogue, and visual processing. The setup in the lab is unique in that it contains two state of the art head-mounted eyetrackers, controlled by customised software that makes it possible to study how participants interact when they solve collaborative tasks. Of course the lab can also be used for single-participant eyetracking studies.
- The Instrumented Meeting Room is designed to record naturally occurring multi-party dialogue in meeting situations. The data stream includes audio from microphone arrays and close-talking microphones, multiple video streams, and data generated by intelligent paper and intelligent white boards.
