ESRC funded postgraduate study in Psychology, Linguistics and Cognitive Science

Five ESRC 1+3 (1 year Masters + 3 years PhD) Quota Studentships

Under the new arrangements for ESRC funding of postgraduate studies we have FIVE ESRC 1+3 full time Quota Studentships starting in September 2005. We are also able to enter a small number of students into the ESRC 1+3 competition award.

We are recruiting students in the areas of Psychology, Linguistics and Cognitive Science. The awards are open to students applying to one of the ESRC recognised 1 year masters courses and who will then pursue a 3 year PhD from a broad range of Psychology, Linguistic and Cognitive Science Topics. (see below for list of courses) Research training and supervision are distributed across disciplines in the University.

Who can apply?

Applicants should normally hold a good honours degree and must be UK or EU citizens.

Deadlines

  • Candidates wishing to be considered for the 1+3 Competition AND 1+3 Quota award should apply by 21st April 2005.
  • No decision date has yet been issued by ESRC for the competition award: watch their website for details.
  • Selection of quota nominees will take place by 5th May 2005.

Application procedure

  1. Students must complete a formal university application. Lists of approved courses are given below as are links to participating subject areas where details of research supervision can be found.
  2. Get an application form from the ESRC Postgraduate Studentships Page. Download Guidance Notes for Applicants and appropriate application orm. Read them carefully.

    Fill in the application form. The parts you need to complete yourself are:
    • 1+3 Form - Section 1 Part 1, Section 2
    • Form DE (declaration of eligibility)
    • Equal Opportunities Policy Form
  3. Submit the completed 1+3 forms to the postgraduate secretary (not the ESRC as suggested on the form):

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT send anything directly to the ESRC as suggested on the form.

  4. You are also responsible for ensuring that your two references are sent to us (Katie Keltie) by the deadlines (15th April for competition/quota, 15 June for Quota only). Your referees should use the Section 1 Part 2 of the ESRC application form (pp.5-6).  Please note that the references should NOT be sent direct to the ESRC, even though the latter is suggested on the ESRC form.

ESRC approved 1 year Masters Degrees

Candidates must chose an MSc course and find a supervisor for PhD study before they apply.

The ESRC 1+3 awards can be applied for applicants to the following MSc courses.  The MSc (Master of Science) requires 12 months of full-time study beginning mid September each year. Study for these MScs cannot commence at any other time of the academic year.

·        MSc in Speech and Language Processing

·        Msc in Developmental Linguistics

·        MSc in Cognitive Science and Natural Language

·        MSc in Informatics

ESRC +3 Studentships Competition (PhD)

We welcome applications from candidates who wish to apply for +3 ESRC studentships.

Who can apply?

  • Applicants should normally hold a good honours degree and must be UK or EU citizens.
  • You must also have obtained a master’s degree on a recognised Postgraduate Research Training  degree programme. Details of such courses are available form List of Recognised Courses (by HEI) 1997-2001 inclusive).  RT signifies that it is approved.

Deadlines

The ESRC have set a +3 deadline of 3rd May, but you must get your applications to us by 21st April to prepare and process your application before we send it on by the deadline. See the ESRC Postgraduate Studentships Page for details and application form.

If you have established that you are eligible, you should contact the relevant subject area (department) – see contacts below - to establish that relevant supervision can be found. If you have not already sent a formal application to the University of Edinburgh then you should email one of the people below.  The ESRC +3 award is submitted by the institution (us, rather than you).
